Type Locality and Naming

Southern peninsula of Liaoning. The name Majiatun Fm derived from the Majiatun stage named by Matsushita in 1931. The typical section is situated in south mountain of Majiatun in Jinxian County, Liaoning Province.

Synonym: (马家屯组)


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is composed of gray, grayish yellow thin-bedded micritic limestone and stromatolitic limestone. Upper part is gray, greenish gray calcareous shale intercalated with thin-bedded micritic limestone. The total thickness is 113 to 179 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The basal part is grayish yellow stromatolite-bearing limestone, which rests conformably on the Shisanlitai Fm.

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Cuijiatun Fm.

Regional extent

Southern peninsula of Liaoning. With a persistent lithology, it is mainly distributed in Jinxian, Dalian area and fragmentally in Fuzhou area in Liaodong Peninsula.

Fossils

The Majiatun Formation yields stromatolites Gymnosolen cf. ramsayi, G. furtus, G. leuis, Katauia karatauia, K. xiwafangensis, Jurusania asymmetrica, etc. Microplants Trachysphaeridium simplex, T. rude, T. rugosum, T. planum, Leiopsophosphaera apertus, L.minor, Asperatopsophos pheara off. bavlensesis, Dietyosphaera macroreticulata, etc.


Age 

Upper-middle (6 of 8) in a succession of eight formations spanning early through middle Sinian (early through middle Ediacaran) formations according to assigned "Z" code and schematic stratigraphic column.
